i went with seville last night to see john brion play at the goodman theater. he was frickin' awesome!! he played by himself, and he would sometimes play just guitar, and then other times he would go behind the drum kit, play drums for a little while, magically loop the drum beats, go play piano, and magically loop the piano music, then go on guitar and sing on top of the drums and piano. other times he'd play just piano. he was really good . . . he's produced records by rufus wainwright and fiona apple and all these other awesome people. and he had a voice that was somewhere around john lennon or ben folds and he was so spontaneous.

at one point early in the show, he wasn't sure what he was going to play. he said he didn't normally take requests, but asked if there was anything that anyone wanted to hear . . . people went crazy shouting stuff out (i didn't even know this guy at all, so i didn't know his songs) . . . he played one of his own songs, but the "request" thing caught hold . . .

he mentioned something about bob dylan for a moment, and how 70's singer-songwriters sucked or something, but that dylan was awesome, and that people tried to be like him but couldn't, and a few minutes later, someone yelled out "lithium!!" so he started playing that, but before he had hit more than two or three notes, someone else yelled out, "don't think twice it's all right!" and so he sang "don't think twice, it's all right" on top of the chords to lithium. it was pretty awesome going from, "you're the reason i'm a'travellin' on, but don't think twice, it's all right," to the "yeaeeeaaaaahhh yeaeeaaaah yeeaaaaaaah" part of lithium. :)

his own songs were pretty great, too. he was really in the moment, though, and just having so much fun. he said he wanted to play something really rockin' and he got a few suggestions before someone yelled, "back in black!" so he did a ragtime-sounding version of "back in black" on the piano with no vocals. as he closed the show, he said he wanted to play something quiet, and someone suggested, "war pigs?" he kind of chuckled, but he didn't play that one.

he did an encore, and it was truly an encore. not an obligatory, "we're going to clap until you come back out because you're supposed to play more songs," but we clapped and cheered because we wanted to hear more, and he came back out because he wanted to play more.

at the end of the encore, he apologized for the ticket prices ($30), saying that they weren't sure how many tickets they were going to sell. to make up for it, he said that there were boxes of cd's out in the lobby, and that we could each have one. i know that prince included a copy of one of his records as part of a recent concert tour of his, but i don't think that was the same thing here. i have yet to listen to the CD, but i'm going to soon.
