I noticed this about McCain the other day when he was being interviewed by Pastor Rick Warren. Warren asked McCain if evil exists, and if it does, do we ignore it, do we negotiate with it, do we contain it, or do we defeat it? McCain said that we should defeat it, while Obama gave a more nuanced answer (see the top third of the page).
The audience strongly applauded McCain's reply to the question, but it seems like they were just kind of stuck in a church crowd moment. Going with some kind of bumper sticker God is Awesome! Defeat Evil! kind of moment. It doesn't make sense to me why so many Americans seem to be scared of having a President who demonstrates a level of intelligence that may be greater than their own, or who doesn't paint things as black and white all the time just to manipulate us. It's like Americans would prefer a President as drinking buddy over a President as diplomat, or it's as if people think that being smart means that you can't relate to people.
